As a 50-centavo provisional fare hike for passenger jeeps went into effect Wednesday, many jeep drivers admitted feeling awkward in collecting the extra fare.
In Quezon City, a driver plying the Muñoz-Vito Cruz route said he expected to have to explain the 50-centavo fare hike to passengers at least on the first day.
"Hindi pa namin matupad, baka magreklamo ang pasahero. Ipapaliwanag na lang namin sa pasahero...," the driver, identified only as Mang Francisco, said in an interview on dzBB radio before dawn Wednesday.
He added that while the 50-centavo hike would help them make ends meet, it may be of little help especially after oil firms raised prices of diesel Tuesday by 60 centavos per liter.
"Makakatulong nang kaunti pero hindi sapat dahil tumaas ang diesel. Mas maganda kung iro-rollback kesa mag-increase. Mahirapan ang commuters kung increase ang pamasahe (The fare hike could help a bit but not much because diesel prices had been raised. It would be better if prices were rolled back. That way, commuters would also be spared)," he said.
On the other hand, some jeep drivers plying routes along Taft Avenue did not charge the extra 50 centavos before 6 a.m., some of them giving P2 in change for passengers who paid P10.
On Tuesday, the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board allowed a 50-centavo provisional fare hike for passenger jeeps.
The LTFRB said the fare hike would take effect Wednesday in all areas except regions where transport groups did not file a petition for a fare hike. — LBG, GMA News
